Unhappy About Your Stretch Marks? Microneedling Can Help
Do you feel embarrassed showing your skin because of stretch marks?
Stretch marks are no stranger to the body. These white, narrow, streak-like marks most often occur on the breasts, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Although stretch marks are usually harmless, you might wish you could get rid of them – and you can!
Microneedling, a minimally invasive approach, is done by pricking the skin with sterilized needles. The result is the erasing of stretch marks for radiant, even-toned skin.
At Shantique Med Spa, located in Torrance, California, we’re pleased to offer microneedling, so you can feel more confident in your skin.
Why do I have stretch marks?
Estimates suggest that 90% of women have stretch marks, and many men do, too. Stretch marks are a type of scarring that occurs when your skin undergoes rapid stretching or changes in size. Stretch marks may appear as red or purple lines on your skin that usually fade to a silvery-white with time.
Causes of stretch marks include:
- Rapid growth
- Weight gain
- Pregnancy
- Genetics
- Medical conditions
- Corticosteroid use
Even though stretch marks are natural, you can lessen their appearance with microneedling.
Smooth away stretch marks
Microneedling gives your skin a total revamp by using a tool or pen called a dermaroller. This device contains hundreds of needles that vary in length. Since stretch marks occur deep in your skin, longer needles (1-2.5 millimeters in length) are used to encourage the most improvement.
Your skin technician applies the dermaroller to unwanted stretch marks to create tiny punctures in your skin that increase blood flow and supercharge collagen production.
What it helps
Aside from stretch marks, microneedling can improve the appearance of:
- Acne scars
- Wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Skin texture
- Rosacea
You’ll notice an improvement in your skin a few days after treatment with results that continue to get better. Most people experience peak results around one month when cells turn over completely, and the collagen fully develops.
Body areas
Microneedling can be safely used on body areas, including:
- Legs
- Breasts
- Back
- Hands
- Arms
- Buttocks
- Face
Most patients don’t describe the treatment to be painful, only slightly uncomfortable. If you’re worried about the procedure, we can apply a topical numbing cream to help alleviate potential discomfort.
Microneedling treatments take less than an hour, so you can easily fit appointments into your schedule. Though you’ll notice an improvement in your skin after one session, we suggest undergoing four to eight treatments to get the results you want.
Prepping for your procedure
Preparing for microneedling is easy. Follow these simple steps to ensure you get the best results:
Avoid sunlight for 24 hours
Sunlight and tanning beds can irritate your skin during your microneedling treatment. Stay out of the sun or wear a strong SPF if you must go outdoors.
Stop using acid-based products
Please refrain from using acid-based products on the treated areas found in many skincare items because this interferes with treatment.
Don’t take blood thinners
You might need to stop taking blood thinning medication for one to three days before your appointment. Don’t hesitate to contact our office to check about the medications you are taking.
Don’t wear lotions, makeup, or perfume
Please don’t wear any lotion, makeup, or perfume on the areas you are getting treated. You may, however, wash your skin using a gentle cleanser.
Take acetaminophen an hour before
Do you have sensitive skin? Taking acetaminophen an hour before your microneedling treatment is a great way to minimize possible discomfort during the procedure.
