Understanding the Different Types of Chemical Peels

You probably took your smooth and vibrant skin for granted when you were 20 years old. But as you get older, large pores, fine lines, and uneven skin tone become all too familiar.

Though no fountain of youth exists to turn back time, the next best thing is a chemical peel. Chemical peels apply an acid-based solution to your face to promote anti-aging benefits for smoother, softer skin. They’re a great treatment to promote rejuvenated skin for a big event or can be integrated into your monthly skin regimen.

Shantique Med Spa is pleased to provide chemical peels to patients in Torrance, California and beyond, who want to get glowing, flawless skin. We have a peel for you no matter what type of skin you have and what concerns you’d like to address.

Read on to learn about the different types of peels and what’s involved.

Get glowing skin STAT

No one wants dull, lifeless skin. Sadly, our world is overruled by toxins in the air and impurities in our household products, making dull skin more common than not.  Do you wish you could say goodbye to that old top layer of skin to reveal the more youthful layer beneath?

Enter chemical peels – a cosmetic treatment used to improve the appearance and texture of your skin. They involve applying a chemical solution to your complexion, which causes the outermost layers to peel off, revealing smoother, rejuvenated skin underneath. Chemical peels stimulate collagen and elastin production, which continue to improve your results even weeks after your procedure.

The benefits of chemical peels are loved by celebrities and beauty gurus across the globe. Chemical peels address skin concerns, including:

This treatment is most commonly used on the face but can also be used on the hands, neck, and chest.

Meet the different types of chemical peels

You probably have a different skin type from your best friend. Similarly, you probably have different skin concerns you’d like to improve. That’s why we provide several different types of chemical peels, based on a different depth of penetration and the specific chemicals used.

Superficial or light peels

These peels target the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) to smooth away mild skin concerns. They are typically composed of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid or lactic acid.

Light peels help improve skin tone, texture, and minor discolorations. They may require multiple treatments for optimal results and only require about a week of downtime.

Medium peels

Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting both the epidermis and the uppermost layer of the dermis. They are usually performed using trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or a combination of TCA and other acids.

Medium peels can address more pronounced skin issues, such as fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, and acne scars. Recovery time is typically one to two weeks with some redness, swelling, and peeling expected.

Deep peels

Deep peels provide the most significant results but also require the longest recovery time. They penetrate the deeper layers of the dermis to address severe skin concerns, including deep wrinkles, extensive sun damage, and precancerous growths.

The chemical used for deep peels is usually phenol. Because of the intensity of the treatment, deep peels are typically performed under sedation or anesthesia, and recovery can take several weeks.

Vi Peels

Created by the Vitaly Institute, the Vi Peel is a medium-strength peel with a unique blend of compounds, which include trichloroacetic, salicylic and retinoic acids, vitamin C, and phenol. This gentle yet effective peel stimulates your body’s natural healing system to promote elastin and collagen production.
